Als prepuber speelde ik in de beslotenheid van mijn slaapkamertje graag voor diskjockey. Ik gebruikte daarvoor een aftands cassetterecordertje, waarmee ik dan in een uur tijd mijn eigen top 10 van favoriete singletjes erdoorheen draaide. Wat nog de nodige moeite kostte, omdat ik de onbedwingbare neiging had erg veel tussen de nummers door te kletsen. Het voor diskjockey spelen heb ik reeds lang geleden gestaakt, maar een top 10 van mooiste liedjes heb ik nog steeds en volgt hieronder.

  1. Aimee Mann - Wise up

    Ik houd van droevige luisterliedjes, dat mag wel blijken uit deze top 10, en dit is echt een van de allermooiste en allerdroevigste liedjes die ik ken. Het komt uit de film Magnolia en alleen al om de muziek zou je die film een keer moeten zien (hoewel het verhaal, de regie, de art-direction en de acteerprestaties ook erg goed zijn).

  2. Highwaymen - True love travels on a gravel road

    Eigenlijk had ik hier natuurlijk Elvis Presley als uitvoerende artiest neer moeten zetten, want hij heeft dit nummer bekend gemaakt, maar ik vind deze versie van de Highwaymen net iets beter. De tekst is echt klassiek-country style, vooral het refrein: 'Love is a stranger and hearts are in danger / All through streets paved with gold'.

  3. Guns 'n Roses - Knocking on heaven's door

    Dit nummer (een Dylan-cover) schijnt erg populair te zijn geweest bij onze jongens in voormalig Joegoslavië. Sommige militairen die geregeld in konvooi over een beruchte doorgangsweg moesten rijden, die - naar ik meen - bekend stond als sniper alley, draaiden dit nummer kei- en keihard in hun cabine om hun gedachten aan de hen omringende sluipschutters te verdringen.

  4. Joan Osborne - Make you feel my love

    Ik heb Bob Dylan altijd een enigszins overschatte artiest gevonden, wat niet wegneemt dat hij diverse pareltjes heeft geproduceerd waaronder deze. Voor deze top 10 heb ik toch gekozen voor de uitvoering van Joan Osborne, omdat ze gezegend is met een hemelse stem, waar ze in dit nummer precies de juiste hoeveelheid emotie in legt.

    Dit is mijn favoriete zomerhit. Ik word er altijd erg vrolijk van en het nummer nodigt onweerstaanbaar uit tot meezingen, hoewel... eerlijk gezegd is het enige wat ik kan verstaan het stukje refrein: 'Quelle drôle d'idée'. Ik heb dan ook geen idee waar dit voormalige meisjesidool over zingt.

    Ik ben een sucker voor oude zwart-wit films en dus ook voor musicals uit de jaren vijftig. Mijn favoriete acteur uit die tijd is Cary Grant, die tien keer betere looks had dan Fred Astaire maar het in charme duidelijk moest afleggen tegen die lelijke dwerg met zijn soepele danspasjes.

    Tom Jones is eigenlijk al zo lang hij optreedt camp geweest en dat is eigenlijk jammer. Daardoor ben je geneigd hem als artiest te onderschatten, terwijl hij in mijn ogen een van de beste performers aller tijden is en een veel betere zanger dan vaak wordt gedacht. Dit nummer is oorspronkelijk van de Talking Heads.

  8. Boz Scaggs - Lowdown

    Boz Scaggs is een blanke zanger die zeer 'zwart' klinkt. Wat maar weer eens bewijst dat goede soul (net als jazz) door iedereen gemaakt en begrepen kan worden. Het was in - ik meen - 1977 dat hij drie hits op rij had: 'What can I say', 'Lido shuffle' en dit nummer, waarvoor hij een Grammy ontving. Hij schijnt trouwens buiten het podium een bijzonder aardige vent te zijn, die nog steeds concerten geeft, zij het voornamelijk in Amerika.

    Het is een deur als een open koe die de waarheid spreekt maar Frank Sinatra heeft verreweg de allerbeste stem uit de showbussiness. Die man is zo cool. Hij zingt zo gemakkelijk. Zijn timing is zo perfect. Technisch niet te overtreffen. In dit vrij zorgeloze nummertje kun je al die virtuositeit goed beluisteren. Probeer het maar eens mee te zingen en dan zul je merken dat hij het steeds net even anders doet dan jij verwacht.
